Northminster Our Church Home
Northminster’s church home has taken many forms through the years.
Starting with the Crescent Heights satellite Sunday school in Tuxedo Park School,
to a nucleus of the new congregation meeting in family homes, to services and Sunday
school in Buchanan School.
The decision was made to build a sanctuary on the corner of the Laycock dairy farm.
December of 1954 (over 55 years ago) saw the congregation in its much anticipated new
home with soaring laminated beams and fashionable blonde woodwork. This is where we are today.
Our home has also had its sorrows. A fire in 1957 gutted the sanctuary and moved us to temporary
homes in the small St. Gabriel’s Anglican Church to the west of us on 32nd Avenue and Buchanan school.
We returned to our sanctuary home (interesting word for our worship space.....sanctuary) for many
years. We had another fire in 1994. This time our ‘sanctuary’ was our large gym. When we returned
to this space we celebrated our sense of place, of ‘being home’.
Our history has made us especially appreciative of our legacy: this worship space.
