Northminster United Church is very passionate about outreach within our surrounding community. Relationships have been established with a few agencies such as North Central Resources, and this helps us focus on those around our church. It also helps us make the most of what we have for time and dollars.   We support many programs in our NE/NW inner city communities along with a few that are city wide.  During the year we fundraise so that we have the means to participate within the community and hopefully make a difference.   Following is a list of agencies and groups that we have worked with and donated to in the last year.

  1. Mission and Service Fund
  2. Our Neighbors in Need
  3. Brown Bagging for Kids
  4. The Alex
  5. U of C Chaplaincy
  6. Acadia Place
  7. Canadian Food Grains
  8. Naramata Centre
  9. Camp Kasota
  10. Calgary Food Bank
  11. Veteran’s Food Bank
  12. St. Stephen’s College
  13. Children’s Cottage
  14. Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter
  15. Sonshine Society of Christian Community Services
  16. Bethany Care Foundation
  17. Y.W.C.A

Below are some of the specific things that Northminster has done in our community.

Mission & Outreach Projects

Emergency Food HampersWe often provide emergency food hampers to families in our neighborhood.  These requests come from several different sources but primarily through North Central Resources.  Our congregation is so generous and continues to ensure that our cupboard is full. They enable us to make sure our neighbours have enough to eat in times of trouble.

Benevolent Fund Assistance  -   Northminster has been able to assist families in many different ways through the Benevolent Fund resources.   With your generous donations, as well as a portion of the proceeds from the Silent Auction, Northminster is able to help families and make a very positive impact in definite times of need.

Baby Month – May is Baby Month.  We collect everything imaginable for babies and support the Alex Youth Program.  The Alex supports youth who have found themselves in the situation of having a baby to care for.  The work The Alex does for youth is outstanding and the agency is in our own neighborhood.  They are so thankful for our yearly donations. They thank Northminster wholeheartedly for the generosity and want you to know that you make a huge difference to these kids.

Brown Bagging for Kids – We have partnered with this initiative to help feed children from Buchanan Elementary school that are in need, for more than 4 years.   We are providing lunches for 4 days a month for a number of children.   Currently we have 5 groups of volunteers that come together to make the lunches and then deliver them to the school. This is a very worthwhile program and working with Buchanan school has been a pleasure.

Community Connection Programs – We continue with our Community Connection Programs and it is nice to see an increase in participation from the community – we love hosting guests from the neighbourhood.   This initiative is meant to bring awareness to the community that the church is there by having some casual, interesting programs that they can attend.  These 2 hour programs have been informative and create a social atmosphere where discussion can be had about different topics.  Programs include:

    • Container Gardening
    • End of Life Planning
    • Decreasing Stress in Your life
    • Dementia Awareness and Information

Christmas Hampers & White Gift Sunday - Recently we partnered with the YWCA to collect food and gift items for Christmas.  Northminster’s congregation are so generous; it was overwhelming how much was collected.  There were so many mitts, scarves, toques, food and gifts.  The items collected on White Gift Sunday were included for the Christmas Hampers, too.  There were games, Christmas decorations, children’s toys and lots of treats and sweets.  It took a truck and an SUV to deliver the donations.  The staff at the YWCA were so thankful.

If you would like to get involved in Mission and Outreach don’t hesitate to make yourself known to one of the committee members.  We would love to have you!
